Mnemonic Devices

Having the power to study right and

remember information can make you feel

as powerful as Superman!

Make up rhymes!  For example, "In fourteen hundred ninety-two, Columbus sailed the ocean blue."

Draw pictures illustrating the most significant information.

Make up number codes.  How many numbers are in the date you need to remember?  Think up a phrase having words with the same number of letters as the numbers in the date.  Each word must have the same number of letters as the number it is representing.  For example, you could use the phrase "I PRACTICED PIANO ENDLESSLY" to remember the year Alaska and Hawaii were admitted to the union (1959).

Make up codes to remember a series of words, names, locations and other facts.

Jog your memory by using the first letter of each word you are trying to remember in a phrase or term.  For example, you can remember the correct order of the planets in our solar system by memorizing this sentence:  My Very Excited Mother Just Sold Uncle Ned Pies ... (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto)

Use Venn Diagrams, songs and mind-maps to help you remember your notes and class work.  When you are tested on the material, jot the mind map or Venn Diagram down at the top of your test paper and refer to it as you answer the test questions.
